AGM
You should all have received the notice of our AGM. It will be held on Monday 12th December at 7.30 p.m. in the Theatre Foyer (Ice Rink entrance). We are delighted that the new Chief Executive of Alexandra Palace, Duncan Wilson O.B.E., will be speaking. The formal items will include a report by the Chair, Nigel Willmott, and the election of the officers and committee. Glass of wine at end.
Introducing Duncan Wilson
Duncan Wilson OBE took up the reins as chief executive of Alexandra Palace in October and will spearhead the regeneration of the Palace. He has a long track record with English Heritage and most recently as head of the Greenwich Foundation, responsible for the Old Naval College, one of London's leading tourist attractions. His experience with heritage and listed buildings will be key to developing a viable strategy for restoring and reusing the theatre. He will talk about his ideas for developing the theatre within the overall regeneration plan after two hectic months getting to know the place and its problems and opportunities.
In The Pink
This was the first social event held for the Friends for a number of years. Marlene McAndrew gave a talk on the history of Haringey's theatres, with a focus on the Ally Pally Theatre, both thoroughly absorbing and with much information new to many of us on the theatre's design. Great food and company made this an enjoyable event. We look forward to more!
TV75
On Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th November a wonderful commemoration of the first public television broadcasts from Ally Pally 75 years before was held in the former BBC bar (now called the Boxing Club), Studio A and in the Theatre Foyer. The anniversary had received publicity in all of the major national papers and a feature in the Radio Times so there was immense public interest. Displays in the Foyer included 3D television where you could shake hands with your screen self and a Newsdesk where children especially enjoyed seeing themselves transported by the magic of a green screen to the front of Ally Pally. Both the Friends of the Theatre and the Hornsey Historical Society had stalls.
Membership doubled
As a result of Open House (previously reported), In the Pink and TV75, our membership has more than doubled - good news for the Theatre.
Wiltons Music Hall and AP Theatre Foyer heating
Committee members visited the remarkable Wiltons Music Hall to look at their new heating system. We too want to improve the heating in our Foyer. We learned a lot from our tour, and have submitted a short report to the Palace management. We are prepared to commit some of our funds to heating, to make this space more usable for everyone. By the way, if you haven't already visited Wiltons, we thoroughly recommend you do!
Please get involved
We would welcome your ideas and input. We are looking for new committee members, and help with our newsletter, a website, and events. Do come to our AGM (or get in touch by email). We'd be delighted to meet or hear from you! Please send on this newsletter to anyone you think would be interested. Finally, we wish you a very enjoyable Christmas and New Year.
