Lottery success - 844,800 HLF grant for Round 1 bid

As you may be aware by now, the Alexandra Palace Charitable Trust, which runs the Palace and Park, has won the backing of the Heritage Lottery Fund for its 23.9m regeneration programme for the Theatre, former BBC television studios and East Court. The HLF has granted the AP Trust 844,800 in Round 1 funding to further develop plans for its 16.8m lottery funding application.

Nigel Willmott, the chair of the Friends of the Theatre, responded on behalf of the Friends of the Theatre committee: "The Friends have been working and campaigning for the refurbishment and reuse of the Victorian Theatre for the past 11 years, since the formation of the group. For most of that time it seemed an impossible dream. Suddenly it is on the way to becoming a reality.

"It is a stunning result for chief executive Duncan Wilson and his team at the Palace, the board of trustees, and for Haringey council, which has fully supported a new strategy of redevelopment of the Palace led by the Trust, rather than a developer.

"We have been one of the many groups whose input has gone into the creation of the regeneration programme and we look forward to continuing to support the next phase of the work, to further develop the design of the project and produce a detailed business plan.

"The refurbishment of the Theatre, keeping its historic look and feel, but creating a multi-use space for music, drama, conference and community use has the potential to make it one of the most exciting and inspiring venues in London."

Friends AGM - 29 May 2013 at 7.30pm in the Transmitter Hall* at Alexandra Palace

A warm invitation to everyone to attend the AGM of the Friends of the Theatre. This will be an important meeting, at which Duncan Wilson, the CEO of Alexandra Palace, will outline what happens next in the regeneration project and how we can best support the project.

The AGM will elect a committee for the next year - four officers plus three ordinary committee members - and we also hope to enlist a group of active supporters, willing to help with growing tasks such as membership and publicity (including the website), as well as helping at activities such as Open House.

Please join us at the AGM for a coffee beforehand and a glass of wine afterwards.

* The entrance to the Transmitter Hall at Alexandra Palace is on the South Terrace, next to the BBC Tower.

Forthcoming events

Over the next couple of months we will be talking to the Trust about how best we can support the regeneration project and what kind of activities we should develop. But we have two dates for your diaries.

On Sunday 21 July, we will have a display table in the Grove, at the 150th anniversary celebration of the opening of Alexandra Park in 1863.

Then on Saturday 21 September, we will be once again be involved in the Alexandra Palace Open House Day, along with the BBC studios. Last year over 700 people attended.
